Nicknamed “Pagoda” for its distinctive concave hardtop, the Mercedes 280 SL W113 combines minimalist elegance, technical innovation, and pure driving pleasure. This metallic medium-blue example with black leather interior has undergone a meticulous conservation restoration that preserves its certified authenticity.
Unveiled at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, the Mercedes “Pagoda” replaced the 190 SL, redefining the concept of a luxury roadster.
With a chassis derived from the W111 “Heckflosse” sedan, a rigid body with crumple zones engineered by Béla Barényi, and clean design by Paul Bracq, the 280 SL strikes the perfect balance between sportiness and comfort.
Concave hardtop, taut surfaces, and the central-star Mercedes grille: the W113 is a masterpiece of elegant simplicity that still stands out among Mercedes classics. This example shows off the rare medium-blue and black leather combo with Zebrano wood dashboard.
Contoured seats, Bakelite steering wheel, and three-point seat belts reflect Mercedes’ commitment to safety as early as the 1960s, making the “Pagoda” an ideal companion for touring between Rome and the Amalfi Coast.
The W113 project introduced innovations such as the roll bar integrated into the windscreen frame and extensive use of high-strength steels. The result is a solid roadster, free of creaks, enjoyable both top-down and with the hardtop fitted.
The 2.3-litre engine with Bosch mechanical injection produces 150 hp and abundant torque across the rev range.
Refurbished with original parts, it delivers instant starts, relaxed motorway cruising, and the trademark velvety Mercedes tone.
